Essentials
Passport/ID
Flight Tickets - (some of you prefer a paper copy!)
Cash/Credit Cards (preferably in the local currency)
Medication
Comfort Items
Travel Pillow
Eye Mask (and/or Earplugs)
Blanket (I get so cold on flights that one is never enough!)
Entertainment
Whether you're travelling alone or with a group, it's important to have something to do on the plane. Here are some ideas:
Headphones - You'll need these if you want to listen to music or watch a movie without disturbing others around you. The best headphones will be noise-cancelling so that they block out background noise and make your listening experience even better.
Portable Charger - If your phone or laptop battery dies during the flight, there won't be any outlets available for charging them up again until after landing! That's why bringing along an external charger is essential; they come in all shapes and sizes so there should be one that fits into any bag easily enough (and also makes sure it doesn't take up too much room). It's worth noting here too though that some airlines do provide power points at every seat but these aren't always reliable--so having an extra option is still recommended just in case!
Snacks
The next thing to bring is snacks. Snacks are important because they give you energy and make the time pass more quickly.
Snacks can be anything from nuts to trail mix, protein bars, jerky, fruit and crackers or chocolate!
Hygiene
While you're at it, don't forget to take your toothbrush, toothpaste and floss. You'll also need hand sanitizer and facial wipes so that you can clean up after eating/freshen up on the plane. Deodorant is a must-have as well!
Technology
Laptop
Tablet
Camera
Phone (with charger)
If you're a photographer or videographer, you want to bring your camera gear with you. If not, then consider what kind of photos and videos you might want to take while on holiday.
Clothing
Sweater/Hoodie
Scarf
Socks
Jacket/coat (depending on the season)
Hat
All these items are obviously for colder climates but you would be surprised at how many people forget them!
First Aid Kit
Plasters/Band-Aids
Antiseptic Wipes
Painkillers (ibuprofen, aspirin, paracetamol)
Antihistamines (for allergies)
Insect Repellent
Consult a health professional where necessary.
Toiletries
You'll want to take toiletries with you, but don't pack too much. You don't want to be weighed down by a bunch of bottles and tubes.
Here are some things that I would recommend bringing (I've hyperlinked them to my personal favs):
Where to buy
Portable charger (for your phone and/or laptop)
Snacks (you're going to be hungry) - local supermarket as can be pricey at the airport.
